Elephant |
A late Hemi engine. |
Hemi |
An engine with hemispherical combustion chambers. Mopar
Hemis came in two flavors: early Hemi's
(aka "whale motors") and the 426
Hemi (aka "Elephant motor") . Quick ID tip: Spark plugs go into the
center of the valve covers.
How to tell them apart: Whales have the distributor in the rear, Elephants
have them in the front, tipped toward the passenger side. |
long block |
A nearly complete assembled engine, including (usually)
block, crank, rods, pistons, cam, heads, valve gear, timing chain and so
on. It may or may not include an oil pump, pan, intake and/or exhaust manifold,
distributor and stuff like that. Contrast to short
block. |
MoPar/Mopar |
Motor Parts. DaimlerChrysler's
parts division. Also, a generic term for cars produced by the former Chrysler Corporation
of DaimlerChrysler and its predecessor companies. This always includes:
Chrysler, Desoto, Dodge, Eagle (post '88), Imperial, and Plymouth. Many
people include the following "Mopars by adoption" as well: AMC (including
pre-'88 Eagle, but excepting Renault designs), Hudson, Nash, and Rambler. |
poly(spherical) |
An engine with polyspherical
combustion chambers. Polys were made in a variety of sizes through 1966. Quick ID tip: The easy way to spot a Polysphere
318 is by the valve covers, they have ripples along the exhaust side of
the cylinder head and are attached with two bolts along the top of the
cover ID. |
short block |
A partially assembled engine, including (usually) block,
crank, rods, pistons, cam, timing chain and so on. It may or may not include
an oil pump, and pan. It does not include head assemblies or valve train,
intake and/or exhaust manifold, distributor and stuff like that. Contrast
to long block. |
